Course Objectives for EMT Basic:
This is a New York State Department of Health certified course taught by certified instructors. The New York State Department of Health requires that all candidates have 230 hours of didactic and practical training (listed below), as well as 10 hours of time logged in an Emergency Room or Ambulance. This course also includes certification in CPR.

What a student will be required to learn and demonstrate?

At the conclusion of the course the E.M.T. Basic must demonstrate competency in:
Patient assessment
Trauma care
Managing medical emergencies
Utilizing Basic Life Support equipment
CPR Hemorrhage control
Fracture and spinal stabilization
Managing environmental emergencies
Emergency childbirth
Use of a semiautomatic defibrillator

Position Description
:
To be a New York State Certified Emergency Medical Technician you must:
- Successfully complete the NYS approved curriculum. Passing scores on practical and        written certification examinations.

- Be at least 18 years of age and have the ability to:
Communicate verbally; via telephone and radio equipment
Lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 with assistance)
Interpret written, oral and diagnostic form instructions
Use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations
Be unaffected by loud noises and flashing lights
Function efficiently throughout an entire workshift without interruption
Read English language manuals and road maps
Interview patient, family members, and bystanders
Document all relevant information in writing
Converse in English with coworkers and hospital staff as to status of patient
